CONSTRUCTIVISM

I have started my research with Lens 1: Communication of Ideas Web 2.0. I am finding this thread of knowledge and different concepts very interesting.

CONSTRUCTIVISM

Constructivism is a learning theory.

It is based on the idea that you can actively construct or reflect on experiences and make your own knowledge. Learners (you and I), use previous knowledge as a starting point and expand, explore and build on it with new knowledge.

Western Governors University (2020) What Is Constructivism para. 2
"Their background and previous knowledge impacts how they are able to learn."

S. Downes, a theorist, believes that the Internet is definitely evolving, highlighting how Web 2.0 is stimulating new ways of engaging and connecting with one another.

"the web was shifting from being a medium in which information was transmitted and consumed, into being a platform in which content was created, shared, remixed, repurposed and passed along."    S. Downes. (2005)

In 'Why Web 2.0 is Good for Learning and for Research: Principles and Prototypes' (2008) pp.10. we are told that S.Downes "stresses the constructivist nature of these principles and contrasts the delivered learning of learning management systems with the learner centred activities triggered by Web 2.0 applications."

The shift from learning from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 has stimulated participation, conversations and social interaction. Reflecting on our personal study on the BAPP ACI I believe we are implementing the constructivist learning theory. As a practitioner we are reflecting on our practise, our base understanding of this and then amplifying our knowledge by expanding on and exploring on it. As S. Downes discusses this is heavily dependent on Web 2.0, a platform created to discuss, share and the theory of remixable data. The Constructivist excels with Web 2.0 as an democratisation of education.

I have attached a link for the article: 'What Is Constructivism' as a reference as it gave me a great understanding on Constructivism and will be a learning theory that I will keep with me for the duration of the course. I hope it helps it helps you understand this learning theory too as I think it will be useful whilst studying on BAPP ACI.

Let me know your thoughts! Ellie

  1. Hi Ellie,
Thank you for sharing this, it was great to read and led me to do further research into learning theories.

It is amazing to think that our knowledge comes from our own experiences and can be improved by learning from others - I have already learnt so much from reading your blogs! This proves that communication and Web 2.0 are paramount to our learning on this course.

Looking forward to your next blog post,

    Abi x

    1. Hi Abigail,

Thank you for the feedback! It's interesting looking into different learning theories and how relatable they are too this BAPP course.

Likewise, your blogs are very insightful! We are exploring initial ideas in our personal blogs then expanding our knowledge and broadening our thoughts by engaging in each others.

  2. Hi Ellie,
This is really interesting, certainly can relate from my own experiences how I've built on prior learning when learning new things.
It's a good inspiration of a way to get started on the module too.
    Thanks
    Sally

  3. Hi Sally,

I agree that reading about these learning theories enables us to sit back and realise the similarities between them and our own learning experiences- tying it together with the aim of us as practitioners to reflect on our own practise!

I look forward to reading your blogs!

  4. Hi Ellie,

Thank you so much for this Blog. It's very interesting to reflect on learning processes and realising how our knowledge is made up. I feel like the concepts we're researching for the course are all things you accept in life but never actually take the time to ask 'why?' and look deeper into!

I've saved the link you shared and look forward to reading it.

  5. Hi Niamh,

Completely! Without realising we implement these learning theories in the way we consume and engage in knowledge, but only by researching it further do we really understand how we apply it.

I really resonate with the idea of 'Multiple Intelligences'
