KNOWING KNOWLEDGE
Today I have gone back to reading 'Knowing Knowledge' by George Siemens. At beginning of the Module I read this and have found re-reading it beneficial as I now have more of an understanding on the theories included and how they have manifested in my practise.
In my current AOL of time management during a transition I explored synthesising connectivism has helped manage my time. During my transition from Dancer to DC I had to prepare how I was going to teach and install a new cast of performers into the productions shows. Establishing time management was vital.
Re-reading 'Knowing Knowledge' has elaborated my understanding of Connectivism and prompted new ideas.
Siemens, G (2006 pg.30) quotes that a principle of learning is "a network formation process of connecting specialised nodes or information sources". If you need to create a more confined network you can create "a personal network of trusted nodes" (2006, pg. 33). He refers to relying on CONNECTED SPECIALISATION. Through a personal network of valuable nodes, each node relies on one another to provide insightful and significant knowledge to profit their learning.
Whilst structing time tables for when the new cast embark, time was limited and I had to ensure no time would be wasted. To reduce the pressure and manage my time efficiently I created a personal network with the new cast. I also introduced myself and fostered any questions regarding the contract.
Siemens G (2006 pg. 86-90) also explored ECOLOGIES, a space and structure for knowledge sharing.
KEY
Components of an Ecology (Siemens, G. 2006 pg. 87)
My critical reflection on my Ecology with the new cast before their embarkation
Informal, not structured
Allowed questions, created a social space
Tool- rich
Able to text, call, voice note, send images and video
Consistency and Time
Checking in routinely, sending different preparatory choreography to learn at the next suitable time
Trust
Created a secure and safe environment, welcoming atmosphere
Fostered, Connected
New cast felt comfortable to connect to me and ask questions/ discuss thoughts
I felt comfortable to connect to them and send video footage to aid our time management once teaching and installing the shows
KEY
Characteristics of Ecologies (Siemens, G. 2006 pg.90)
My critical reflection on my Ecology with the new cast before their embarkation
Space for gurus and beginners to connect
Connect with their dance captain, establish a relationship
Debate and dialogue
Speak about production content and life onboard a ship
Search archived knowledge
Peers can go back to welcome information and video footage. I can search archived information on shoe sizes to send to costume
Communicate new information and knowledge
Any changes to choreography
Manifesting Siemens theory of connectivism and creating an Ecology and Personal Network of trusted nodes whom have connected specialisation into my practise helped establish my time management and allow leverage for unseen circumstance once on board. Having an Ecology as a mode of learning was of great benefit to me and the dancers.
I'd love to know your thoughts on this one!

Hi Ellie,
ReplyDeleteWell done on moving your thoughts on this AOL into an academic reflection, I'm still on my first read through of Knowing Knowledge. Very impressed with how you've linked this all together. :)

Hi Ellie, This is a great blog and it has given me a better understand by you relating your practice through a breakdown of terms. I really liked this book as I felt I could really engage with it. i struggle reading long texts with lots of information but each area of this book allowed me to reflect on my practice using the ideas he involved. I never thought I'd be saying this but I do wish we had a larger word count as areas like this could be discussed in such depth with so much reference! x
