MODULE 2 CALL ON INTERVIEWS

On Monday 01/11/21 we took a call with all supervisors to discuss our research methods.

As my research project is surrounding personal branding online, and I intend to recruit my participants through messaging via Web 2.0, Helen posed the idea that I could include in my proposal theory from Module 1 regarding Web 2,0 and how it has effected my practice and shapes my inquiry. This will be a focus whilst continuing to write my proposal this week!

We discussed, Why are interviews a data collection process:

  • Contemporary data
  • Complement literature
  • Current
  • Direct
*Be aware of assumptions and perceptions in interviews*

Sam highlighted some interesting points surrounding interview techniques:

  • Your first question should be a throw away, participant has control
  • Engage eye contact
  • Don't have a piece of paper in-front of you the whole time
  • Be present
  • Actively listen
  • Don't be distracted by transcribing
  • Feel privileged to be taking this interview
  • Recognise that you hold authority
  • Consider recording
We spoke about having a Debrief after the interview. This is as a result of the interview and is a space and opportunity for the participant to offer feedback on the process. This can be 2-3 weeks later and can be informal.

At the end of the interview ensure that you have a clear end, discuss how you will use the data and how you can be accessed by the participant if needed.

End.

Yesterday (5th November) our MORE Forms were due in. Our drafts are due in next week (Wednesday the 10th of November) so today I intend on continuing with my proposal focusing on the Analysis of Data section. I will also construct my Gant Chart- Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated.

I hope to do a Pilot Interview tomorrow, I will blog how this went afterwards!
